  • Photographing Apollo – The Birth of Space Photography

Members enjoyed a riveting presentation, “Photographing Apollo – The Birth of Space Photography”, about the development of photography during the NASA Apollo space programme.  Famously, the Apollo project from 1961 to 1972 succeeded in putting the first men on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth. Peter is a photography enthusiast and has been taking photographs for over 40 years.  About two years ago he treated himself to a nice new Nikon Z7 Mark II. He is also a member of Bedford Astronomical Society, which was founded in 1987 and is based at Bedford School.  [...]

  • Royal Photographic Society Success

We were delighted to learn that, just the previous day, another of our members had achieved a Royal Photographic Society (RPS) distinction. Last December Tricia Meers submitted a panel of ten printed images seeking to gain a Licentiate (LRPS) distinction.  Unfortunately, her submission failed – because of some technical issues with three images, rather than any photographic failing. However, the submission was judged to be good enough to be resubmitted once the issues had been resolved. So Tricia took advantage of the support available from the RPS and, through a “one-to-one” with one of the assessors [...]

  • The Stories Behind My Favourite Images

Steve suggested that a lot of images in clubs are “similar”.  But he likes to use creative digital techniques to produce visually distinctive images. Steve is a member (since 1983) and past President of Amersham Photographic Society.  He also chairs the Amersham Beyond Group which concentrates on creative photography and photo-based art. He first encountered Photoshop while working in the USA for four years in the 1990s.  He quickly realised that this would give him an unlimited toolbox to manipulate images and be creative.  He has of course been experimenting with a variety of post-processing techniques [...]

One of our main external competitions is the CACC Rosebowl. This is a projected image (PDI) competition organised by the Chilterns Association of Camera Clubs (CACC). We enter as a club with images selected by the committee.

The competition takes place in a league style with 3 rounds held at host clubs. The league is organised into random groups of 3 or 4 clubs, so that each club competes against different clubs in each round. The top 12 clubs from the league stage are invited to the Rosebowl Final, which takes place on the CACC Big Day in April.

  • The subject matter is ‘Open’.
  • Clubs can retain or change images in any way they want between league matches, and for the final.
  • For the league matches, clubs enter 15 images each, with no more than 4 per author.
    • Images are scored out of 20 and the scores totalled to determine the winning club.
    • The winning club is awarded 5 points, 3 points for 2nd place, 2 for 3rd and 1 for 4th.
    • These points are counted to determine final league placings and which clubs go through to the final.
  • At the final, the top 12 clubs from the league each enter 8 images, with no more than 2 per author.
    • Images are scored out of 20 and the scores totalled to determine the winning club.

If you would like to know more, please read the “Rosebowl Requirements” pdf on the CACC website: www.thecacc.org.uk.

The current year’s fixture list and results can be found on the CACC site.

In previous years LBPC has made it to the final – we came 5th in 2009/10, joint 6th in 2011/12 and in 2017/8 we came 2nd.

This is only possible because the club members supplied their best images, from which we chose our winning panels. Club members are encouraged to submit images to the External Competitions Coordinators – contact details are in the Club Handbook.

Taking Images vs Making Images – Steve Brabner

Steve is a member of the Amersham Photographic Society. And he chairs a sub-group there (the Amersham Beyond Group) which concentrates exclusively on creative photography and photo-based art. And, anyway, it’s all been done before. Accordingly, Steve prefers to “make” images and produce something unique.
